Who is Nambi Narayanan?

S. Nambi Narayanan, he was born on December 12, 1941. He is an Indian aerospace engineer who previously worked for ISRO (Indian Space Research Organization). In 2019, the Government of India awarded him the Padma Bhushan.

He oversaw the team that secured French technology for the Vikas engine powering India’s first PSLV. In addition, he was the Chief Director of the Cryogenic Division of the Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO). He attended the Thiagarjar Institute of Technology in Madurai and the Institute of Technology in Thiruvananthapuram, and before enrolling at Princeton University, he received a NASA scholarship.

Narayanan is credited with introducing liquid rocket technology to India in the 1970s. He has also worked on liquid-fuel engines.

Nambi Narayanan Early Life:

Nambi Narayanan was born in Nagercoil on December 12, 1941, in a Tamil family. He holds a Bachelor of Technology in Mechanical Engineering from his Thiagarajar College of Engineering, Madurai. Although Nambi lost his father, he is doing study in Madurai.

He had two younger sisters. His mother fell ill soon after her father died. Nambi married Meena Nambi. The couple has a son, a businessman, and a daughter, Geetha, a teacher at a Montessori school in Bangalore.

Nambi Narayanan Career:

Narayanan joined ISRO in 1966 as a technical assistant at the Thumba Equatorial Rocket Launching Station after studying mechanical engineering in Madurai. In 1969 he received a NASA grant and enrolled at Princeton University.

There he completed his master’s degree in chemical rocket propulsion under Professor Luigi Crocco. Finally, he returned to India with his knowledge of liquid propulsion at a time when Indian rocketry relied solely on solid fuels.

He wrote that he must teach Sarabhai about liquid propulsion technology. As a result, in 1974, ISRO agreed to transfer Viking engine technology from the Societe Europeenne de Propulsion in exchange for 100 person-years of engineering.

His three teams carried out this move, with Narayanan leading his team of 40 engineers in charge of acquiring French technology. As a result, the Government of India awarded him the Padma Bhushan Award on January 26 2019.
